CIO

The Washington Post today reports on the salaries and bonuses Fannie Mae executives will receive this year.  Julie St. John (pictured above), Fannie’s EVP and CIO, will be paid a salary of $529,642.  Her bonus will exceed $700,000.  (For those of you who don’t remember, Fannie Mae got caught in an accounting scandal in 2004. The company was found to have manipulated its earnings going back to 1998.)

Yesterday, Delta Air Lines promoted Shirley Bridges to CIO and president and CEO of its subsidiary Delta Technology.  She most recently served as Delta Technology’s COO, where she was responsible for overseeing business processes and maintenance and operation of systems.  A sixteen year veteran of the airline, Bridges previously served as vice president of airline operations systems.  In that capacity she was responsible for managing all software applications that run Delta’s maintenance, repair and overhaul facility, its operational control center, its flight attendant and pilot scheduling and communications systems, and its corporate compliance and safety reporting systems.

Bridges has some notable predecessors in this role. Among them:

  • Brian Leinbach, who was named SVP and CIO of Delta Airlines and president and CEO of Delta Technology in April 2005.  Bridges succeeds Leinbach, who left his post late in 2005, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
  • Curtis Robb, who moved into the role in an acting position in February 2002, after Bob DeRodes left for Home Depot. Robb was made official CIO of the airline and CEO of the subsidiary in June 2002. He retired April 1, 2005.
  • Bob DeRodes (pictured at right, on the cover of the August 1, 2004 issue), who joined Delta in 1999 and resigned in 2002 to join Home Depot, where he remains as CIO.
  • Charlie Feld held this post from roughly 1997 to 1999.

Smart Office, an Australian publication for IT vendors serving the small the mid-sized business market, reports that high profile Aussie CIO Fiona Balfour will become CIO of Australian telecom Telstra.   She will join the company in April and will report to the COO, Greg Winn.  Balfour is reportedly leaving her post as CIO of Qantas Airlines, where she currently serves as CIO, in March.  Vish Padmanabhan, who most recently served as CIO of Telstra, will become the telecom company’s deputy CIO under Balfour.

One of the key strategies that IT teams are pursuing to reduce capital costs while boosting asset utilization and employee productivity is the transition to highly virtualized data centers. However, IDC finds that expectations for further boosts in IT asset use and operational efficiency often surpass the actual results for a variety of reasons. These problems can quickly overwhelm any hoped-for benefits as the scope of virtual server deployment expands.
For your IT organization to keep pace with the business, you need a new, faster approach to infrastructure deployment-an approach that increases agility and accelerates time to application value. That's HP Converged Systems. Built on Converged Infrastructure, these systems deliver the industry's first portfolio of pre-integrated, tested, and optimized infrastructure solutions for applications running in virtual, cloud, dedicated, or hybrid environments.
