1. "EU Fines Microsoft Another $1.3 Billion for Antitrust Abuse,"

The European Commission slapped Microsoft with a 899 million euros (US$1.3 billion) fine for its continued failure to follow terms of the 2004 antitrust ruling against the company. That's on top of 777.5 million euros Microsoft has already been fined by Europe's top competition authority -- the original fine in the ruling was 497 million euros and then another 280.5 million euros was tacked on for noncompliance. The standing total of 1.7 billion euros, or US$2.6 billion, is "for a clear disregard of its legal obligations," Commissioner for Competition Neelie Kroes said at a news conference announcing the fine. Microsoft said that it is "focusing on steps that will improve things for the future." In advance of the latest fine, the company last week announced a major effort to open up its APIs and make its products interoperable, which prompted skepticism from the Commission.
2. "With Mobile Browser, Mozilla Hopes to Shake Up Market,"

Mozilla is in what are being called "informal" talks with mobile operators regarding a mobile version of Firefox it is developing. Mozilla expects to have a free mobile browser for embedded Linux and Windows Mobile out by the end of the year, a move that the company hopes will "break open a closed market." Five engineers are working full time on the project at the company's mobile development center in Copenhagen, with more expected to be hired.
3. "Intel Plans Dual-Core Version of Diamondville,"

Intel is planning a dual-core version of its low-power processor code-named Diamondville, which would put Intel in competition with vendors that are sprinkling the market with low-cost desktop processors. The chips will be out around midyear, according to a source with knowledge of Intel's plans, and Intel's move into that low-cost processor market is expected to give it a big boost.
