Dell Jumps on the AMD 'Green Grid' Bandwagon
On Wednesday, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Chief Executive Hector Ruiz announced that Dell is the latest company to join AMD’s The Green Grid, a group of companies dedicated to reducing the amount of power consumed by data centers, EE Times reports.
Ruiz made the announcement during his keynote speech in front of the 2006 World Congress on Information Technology in Austin, Texas, according to EE Times.
Companies like Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard and IBM are already members of The Green Grid, Ruiz said, and each has employed AMD Opteron processors for servers, EE Times reports. AMD claims the processors use less energy than comparable products from rival Intel, according to EE Times.
AMD’s CEO also asked Intel to take part in its “50X15” project, meant to connect half of the world’s population to the Internet by 2015. However, Intel Chief Executive Paul Otellini mentioned a similar initiative led by his company called the World Ahead Program, EE Times reports.
In reference to the Intel program, Ruiz said he was pleased that the company “has recognized” the need for computing resources in developing countries, according to EE Times.
