Via Signs License for Arm Processors

Via Technologies is adding new cores to its lineup of microprocessors, allowing it to develop chips to power consumer electronics products, a company executive announced Wednesday.

Via has licensed Arm’s ARM926EJ-S and ARM968E-S processor designs. Financial terms of the deal with Arm, a U.K. company that develops and licenses processor technology, were not disclosed.

The agreement allows Via to incorporate these processors into its own designs and products. The new additions broaden a lineup that’s been built around the C7 processor, Via’s most powerful chip. "Using the Arm architecture, we can come up with more exciting devices," said Richard Brown, Via’s vice president of marketing.

The types of devices that will use these chips include set-top boxes and personal media players, he said. Via did not indicate when products based on chips using the Arm designs would be available.

Computex runs through June 10.
