Chrome turns 32

Ah, your early thirties – that time when you realize you’re closer to 40 than 20. It’s probably a lot less stressful for a browser, of course, and Chrome 32 has some cool new features that have probably already been delivered to you by this time, thanks to the magic of automatic updates. Here’s a quick look.

Chrome 32

Supervised users

Keeping kids from getting at the naughtier bits of the Internet has been a headache for parents pretty much since the Internet was invented. Setting specific, personalized permissions for, say the 8-year-old and the 13-year-old should be child’s play. (Sorry.)

Chrome 32

Noisy tab warnings

While we should note that there have been extensions around to do this for some time, it’s great to have a built-in visual indicator of which tab in your main browser window is autoplaying some stupid ad. It also includes indicators for tabs that are using your webcam or streaming video to your TV.

Chrome 32

Tougher safe browsing warnings

None of your namby-pamby “oh, this may be malicious, but we don’t want to hurt its feelings by saying so” here – Chrome 32 is tough on crime, telling you, up-front about the villainy and evil of that bad content attempting to mess with you.

Chrome 32

New Metro interface

For the Windows 8 users out there, Chrome 32 includes a newly redesigned interface for the Metro side of the operating system, which includes a built-in launcher for Chrome apps, among other handy tweaks and slick new visuals.

Chrome 32

Plenty of security fixes

Google paid out $8,000 in security bounties to outside consultants, for finding some of the more serious holes in Chrome 32. The lion’s share of the money, $5,000, went to Joao Lucas Melo Brasio, for discovering a bug that would have allowed an “unprompted sync with an attacker’s Google account.” Yikes.

Chrome 32

“Lots of” behind-the-scenes performance and stability tweaks

As with pretty much every new version of Chrome, Google is eager to trumpet the browser’s high performance and solid stability.

Chrome 32

Flash 12.0.0.41

Chrome 32 also includes the latest version of Flash, which fixes a huge swath of bugs in the media framework – including a printer bug which affected XPS printing on 64-bit versions of Chrome.
