Ah Star Trek, what a long history this franchise has.
From its humble beginnings as a failed television cult show, to a successful film series (financially at least), to a Next Generation reboot in the late 80s and early 90s that was quite good (if not a little too PC namby-pamby), to my personal favorite spin off Voyager starring Captain Janeway and of course 7 of 9 (Hey, I was in my early 20s at the time), to such truly terrible shows like Deep Space 9 and the really awful Enterprise and of course a continuing film series for the Next Gen cast which has a few very solid movies in the lineup, it has been one long and weird ride for generations of geeks who like to think that coming out of their parents basement for dinner is some form of social engagement.
J.J. Abrams of Lost fame and some other really good movies (see Super 8), took this bad boy on for the first Star Trek reboot in 2009 and hit it out of the park. Essentially updating Star Trek and making it more like Star Wars (read: More action and effects, less social commentary and Altarian Brandy) and giving a whole new generation of dorks a reason for something to look forward to beyond the next log-in to World of Warcraft.
For me, excitement over movie releases and especially sequels is somewhat muted, due to many dashed hopes and dreams of being duped by shady and misleading movie trailers, but I am truly excited for this movie. Rock on Captain Kirk!
