The iconic Heron Tower in London is set to be renamed Salesforce Tower London as the San Francisco cloud giant continues its push into the UK.

The move comes a month after Salesforce announced its intentions to build a new headquarters in San Francisco in a 61-storey skyscraper that's also been named the Salesforce Tower. The skyscraper, due to be opened in 2017, will be the tallest in San Francisco.

Speaking at the Salesforce 1 World Tour in London yesterday, George Hu, Salesforce's chief operating officer, said that the firm would be expanding the amount of office space it has in the skyscraper and rebranding it as Salesforce Tower London.

The company, best known for its customer relationship management (CRM) product, will take an additional 50,000 sq ft on a 15 year lease to create "two contiguous villages" over floors 26-31.

Standing at 230 metres (755 ft) tall, including a 28 metres (92 ft) mast, the skyscraper is the tallest building in the City of London and situated less than a mile from Old Street's Silicon Roundabout.

Gerald Ronson, CEO of Heron International, which built and owns the building, said: "We set out to create an iconic building that would set new standards for innovation and quality in commercial office space attracting the finest international organisations. We are delighted that this concept has been fully embraced by Salesforce.com and to have reached an agreement with them to rename the building Salesforce Tower London to reflect their status as the building's largest occupier."

Many of London's residents and workers who see Heron Tower on a daily basis may find it hard to start calling it by its new name.

Salesforce EMEA president Miguel Milano said the UK is fundamental to the company's global strategy.

Salesforce previously revealed that it plans to open a new data centre in the UK later this year to support a growing customer base in the region.
