Yahoo, in its crusade to reinvent itself, is adding another item to the agenda: revamping its small-business Web hosting unit.
Yahoo Small Business handles Web hosting, domain registration, e-commerce and email services for small businesses. The company is looking to hire a visual designer as part of a larger plan to "reinvent the core user and visual experience" for the division, Yahoo said in a job posting that was published to its site last Friday.
The designer will work with a team of other designers, product managers, marketers and engineers "to create a whole new experience that helps small business owners start, build and grow their businesses," Yahoo said.
The plan appears to encompass a range of devices across desktop and mobile.
Yahoo recently added more workers to its small-business team through its acquisition of Rondee, a conference-calling service provider; and Lexity, an e-commerce app platform. Last month Yahoo relaunched Lexity as Yahoo Commerce Platform, designed to strengthen Yahoo's tools and apps for small-business owners. Among other things, those apps let companies get listed and advertise on shopping sites and sell their products on Facebook.
Yahoo is "recruiting into new roles across multiple functions," a company spokeswoman said regarding the job posting.
Currently, Yahoo's small-business site includes various services for small businesses at different price points. Companies, for instance, can create a domain starting at US$9.95 a year, or create an e-commerce site through Yahoo starting at $10.19 a month.
It is unclear how much money Yahoo makes from the small-business unit by itself. Transactional revenue, however, falls under the company's "other" revenue, which totaled roughly $958 million last year.
Over the past year, Yahoo has been relentless in its efforts to redesign its site properties and launch new products. Since Marissa Mayer took the helm in July 2012 as CEO, other redesigns have included its Flickr photo-sharing service, Yahoo News, and most recently its email service. The company has also made a slew of acquisitions, most notably Tumblr for roughly $1 billion.
Making Yahoo "cool again" has been a key element in the company's reinvention efforts. But a revamped service for small-business hosting could help Yahoo attract a wider array of customers beyond its existing users.
