Analytics and advertising firms tracking Apple's new mobile operating system iOS 7 said today that its uptake has been 14% faster than last year's iOS 6.
Boston-based Fiksu, an iOS and Android app marketing firm, said that as of early today, iOS 7 powered 58.3% of all Apple mobile devices accessing its clients' apps. That was a significantly higher percentage than 2012's iOS 6 or 2011's iOS 5 after the same length of time since their public releases.
iOS 6 had grabbed a 47.5% share in the same stretch, while iOS 5 had accounted for just 27.2% in the same timeframe.
Meanwhile, mobile advertising company Chitika of Westborough, Mass., updated earlier data and said that 51.8% of the Apple mobile devices accessing the ad networks servers early today were running iOS 7.
By comparison, Chitika had pegged iOS 6's one-week uptake at 47%.
Mixpanel, a San Francisco-based mobile app analytics vendor, has also tracked iOS 7 uptake. As of 8 a.m. PT, the new operating system accounted for 61.3% of the Apple devices accessing Mixpanel clients' apps or websites. That was up from 49.7% last Saturday at 10 p.m. PT.
Mixpanel did not provide a comparison with iOS 6's early uptake in September 2012.
The average of the three company's current iOS 7 share was 57.3%, while the average difference between iOS 7 and iOS 6 for the two firms that provided comparative data was 7.8 points, or an increase of about 14% for iOS 7 over iOS 6.
Even Apple has touted the quick-paced iOS 7.
In a statement Monday that also announced sales of 9 million iPhones over the first three days of iPhone 5S and 5C availability, CEO Tim Cook boasted of iOS 7's adoption. "More than 200 million iOS devices are now running the completely redesigned iOS 7, making it the fastest software upgrade in history," Cook said.
Apple started serving iOS 7 on Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. PT, and shipped the operating system with the new iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, which went on sale two days later.
iOS 7 can be installed as an upgrade on the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5; the iPad 2, the third- and fourth-generation iPads with Retina screens, and the iPad Mini; and the fifth-generation iPod Touch that debuted, with different storage sizes, in October 2012 and May 2013.
