Apple Watch: How to turn off sounds

Disable sounds on your Apple Watch for a quieter experience

By default the Apple Watch comes with sounds turned on, and for some users this is fine. But for others it can be quite an annoyance, and it cuts against the idea of the Apple Watch as being a way to quietly and unobtrusively receive notifications and other information.

If you're one of the folks that prefers a quiet Apple Watch, it's quite easy to disable them. And I'll show you how in this tip.

There are two ways you can turn off sounds on your Apple Watch. The first can be done on the Apple Watch itself, and the alternative way is in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

How to disable sounds via the Apple Watch settings menu

1. Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.

2. Tap on Sounds and Haptics.

3. Tap the Mute button to the on position.

Either way works fine to disable sounds on your Apple Watch, but I used the first option to get rid of them on mine.

I disabled sounds when I first got my Apple Watch

I knew immediately when I got my Apple Watch that I didn't want it to make sounds. I very much prefer it to be a quiet way to receive information that doesn't disrupt or annoy other people around me. So I turned mine off right away.

Do I miss having sounds on my Apple Watch? Not at all since the Taptic Engine keeps me alerted to anything I need to know. So far I haven't run into a single issue with having a quiet Apple Watch. I'm able to use it to the fullest while also eliminating any potentially irritating noises that might otherwise have emanated from it.

If you aren't sure if you should turn off sounds on your Apple Watch, try it with the sounds on first. If you're happy with it then no problem. But if you find that the sounds you hear annoy you, be sure to follow the steps I listed above to disable sounds on your Apple Watch.

Sometimes quieter really is better when it comes to the Apple Watch.
