How do you spot a BlackBerry guru? A new certification program from Blackberry-maker RIM, set to begin this fall, should help IT leaders who have a growing need for mobile talent.

CIO — Research In Motion (RIM) , maker of the popular BlackBerry handheld, on Thursday announced a new certification program aimed at corporate BlackBerry administrators, support technicians, consultants and enterprise application developers.

To receive the certifications, interested parties will need to pass computer-based examinations meant to gauge their knowledge of the BlackBerry platform and its associated components, including the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) and individual RIM smartphones.

"Mobile technology is becoming increasingly important in everyday life, so there will continue to be a constant and critical need to have a base of people who understand the intricacies of this technology," says Ray Kelly, Senior VP of Sales and Client Services with Prometric, a provider of testing and assessment services, and the company selected by RIM to develop, manage and administer the examinations.

The findings of a recent Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) survey of 3,578 IT managers mirror Kelly's sentiments. During the next five years, technical proficiency in supporting and maintaining wireless infrastructure and mobile devices, and related expertise, will be among the most sought after IT skills, according to CompTIA.

The following certifications will be added to RIM's existing list of qualifications in the fall of 2009:

  • BlackBerry Certified Systems Administrator, for tech support representatives who deploy and manage BlackBerry Enterprise Solutions
  • BlackBerry Certified Server Support Specialist, which is meant to gauge IT professionals' skills in BES upkeep and maintenance and related tasks
  • BlackBerry Certified Support Specialist, for IT staffers who work with end users in BES or BlackBerry Internet Service environments
  • BlackBerry Certified Solution Designer, for consultants who provide services to organizations planning BlackBerry Enterprise Solution deployments or additional post-deployment support.

Certifications for developers, trainers, sales reps and device experts will become available during 2009, according to RIM.

The new certifications will be offered to RIM employees at four corporate locations and to the general public starting this fall at 4,700 Prometric test centers located throughout the 135 countries where carriers offer RIM products and services.

A select few attendees of RIM's upcoming Wireless Enterprise Symposium, to be held in Orlando, Fla., from May 12 to May 15, will also have a chance to earn the new BlackBerry Certified Systems Administrator qualification by taking the exam at the event. (Interested parties can register for the WES certifications online.)

As more and more CIOs are beginning to see significant benefits from letting employees choose the device they use to get their jobs done, the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend is spreading. According to the Computerworld Consumerization of IT Study, about half of the 604 respondents said their organizations allow employees to do work using their own devices either away from the office or at work. Whether these devices are smart phones, tablets, or laptops that are used in the office or while working remotely, companies that embrace this trend are finding their employees are more productive and experience greater job satisfaction. What's more, enterprises can significantly reduce up front costs and allow for flexible work hours by letting employees use their device of choice anytime, from anywhere.
In this paper, we analyze the delivery of live and on-demand mobile video content. It focuses on specific ways in which organizations can follow best practices to ensure the experience of video communication is maximized for viewers, while keeping corporate networks running smoothly.
There's no denying that the wisdom of a company resides in the heads of those directly responsible for the non-routine work of the organization. There's also no denying that management teams are looking to find better employee communications solutions and reduce costs. This is coupled with increased demand to better manage projects, customer service, product launches, training, and sales by workforces that are separated by time zones and using mobile devices. This need for wide-scale communications at lower cost is fueling recent organizational demand for scalable, affordable enterprise video and employee generated video content or "EGC"
The wave of video in the enterprise will continue to rise as the communication medium and the enabling technologies become ubiquitous in our daily personal and business lives. Businesses must be fully aware of the challenges and requirements of deploying an enterprise video solution. With a proper approach, adequate preparation, and skilled analysis, your organization will be able to accurately build an effective, scalable YouTube for the Enterprise framework that leverages your existing IT infrastructure and is aligned with your business goals.
This whitepaper aims to identify those users, the reasons they exist and to outline what your organization can do about them.
