Why It's Significant
Everyone else in the virtualization market is chasing VMware, which gives it significant power to set direction for the market. Today VMware has better than 80 percent% of the enterprise market for server virtualization and its ESX Server product has set the standard for others to follow. But now that open-source hypervisor maker Xen has merged with Citrix, and now that Microsoft has jumped into the hypervisor game, VMware will face new competition on licensing prices and innovation. VMware also faces a slew of startup rivals in the management tools arena.
