Glo Mobile, the fastest growing telecommunications network in Africa, formally received a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) license in Accra, Ghana, last Friday.

Presenting the license was National Communication Authority (NCA) Chairman Jude Kofi Arthur, who said he is optimistic that Glo will bring innovative products to Ghana. He further advised the telco to always consider industry stakeholders -- including the government, fellow operators, regulators and the general public -- in all of its endeavors.

"This is the end of the licensing process but the beginning of the relationship with Glo," he said.

Glo Mobile management and its board are grateful to the government, the people of Ghana and especially the NCA, said Glo Group Mobile Group COO Mohamed Jameel at the presentation ceremony.

"We won't let the NCA and the government down, and we'll leave no stone unturned in our bid to provide world class and innovative telecommunication service for the people," he said. "We thank you for the transparent international bidding process."

"We are challenged by the confidence the NCA and the general public have generously reposed in us based on our continental pedigree, and we wish to assure you that we shall, with your collective support and goodwill, meet your expectation and yearning for quality and affordable telecoms products and services," Jameel continued.

Jameel discussed the company's ambitious submarine cable project, which he called the largest by any single investor on the continent. The project, named Glo-1, will extend from Nigeria through Ghana to Europe, with a dedicated link to the U.S.

"This project will be beneficial to the West African subcontinent, including Ghana, and it is projected that the impact will be felt by businesses and people all over," he said.

Glo Mobile made its debut outside of Nigeria in June when it launched in the Republic of Benin, an operation the company said has attracted an overwhelming subscriber base.
