The Rwandan government has confirmed the purchase of 5,000 laptop computers for the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project in order to digitalize the country’s primary- and secondary-school curriculums.
Rwanda is participating in the OLPC roll-out program, which the government said will serve all primary-school children within five years.
“I can now confirm that Rwanda has ordered the laptops for the OLPC project," said Théoneste Mutsindashyaka, minister of state for primary and secondary education, in a telephone interview July 24. "The laptops, in fact, have already arrived in the country."
Last week, the government refused to reveal the number of laptops it was buying, and it has yet to reveal the cost of the project.
The deal between Rwanda and OLPC was sealed last year, when President Paul Kagame met OLPC Founder and Chairperson Nicholas Negroponte.
