EMC Unveils Next-Generation Storage, in the Cloud
EMC's much-anticipated hardware and software combination allows storage virtualization on a massive scale. The storage giant revealed new details today on its next-generation products and how they tap into virtualization and the cloud.
Customers probably wouldn't want to apply Atmos to servers and storage they already have, according to Woo, because it is designed for environments that are dense in both computing and storage capacity.
While EMC is gearing Atmos toward huge content distribution services, such as video and photo sharing sites, Woo says the Atmos concept could be dialed down to smaller scales. Enterprises are beginning to think about building so-called internal clouds with a utility approach combining network, storage and server virtualization, he notes.
"You will see enterprises move toward that, especially in these economic conditions," Woo says. "It's not an easy transition."
