UK Minister to Launch Green IT Conference

The minister for sustainable development, Lord Hunt, and chief information officer at the 2012 Olympic Games Gerry Pennell, will introduce the Green IT conference Thursday.

Computerworld UK — The minister for sustainable development, Lord Hunt, and chief information officer at the 2012 Olympic Games Gerry Pennell, will introduce the Green IT conference Thursday.

The speakers will talk alongside Forrester analysts Christopher Mines and Euan Davis, introducing the conference which takes place in London's Business Design Centre this Wednesday and Thursday.

Speakers and delegates at the event will assess how green IT fits in with the tough economic climate, and how it can enable businesses to cut costs while vastly improving their green profile.

London 2012 Olympics CIO Gerry Pennell will speak about delivering a lasting IT infrastructure to the region. Among other speakers, Stuart Hasking, chief technology officer at Deutsche Bank, will make a presentation on how the financial sector can reduce IT costs while delivering a sustainable technology infrastructure. William Thomas, head of sustainable technology at HSBC, will speak on how the bank is using green IT to benefit the whole group.

In the retail sector, Angela Morrison, IT and change director at supermarket Sainsbury's, will talk about how to deliver measurable financial and environmental benefits through green technology. Tom Scott, IT strategy director at Somerfield, will speak about outsourcing infrastructure to deliver cost effective IT.

The role of green IT within an efficient business will be the topic of a presentation by Paul Coby, British Airways chief information officer. And Mark Cavill, green IT lead at Royal Mail, will speak on how to drive behavioural change to gain energy savings.

From the public sector, Dave Carter, head of digital development at Manchester City Council, and Frank Tudor, director of supplier relationships at the Department for Work and Pensions, will both make presentations on how to achieve large scale cost savings through green IT.

The event will combine case studies with industry best practice sessions, and promises to help those managing IT to deliver a cost-effective, successful green IT infrastructure.
