SharePoint backup is designed to help administrators and end-users to not only protect data that is increasingly being stored on SharePoint, but also recover data quickly and efficiently.

The company comes from a background of developing tools for Microsoft’s SQL Server, and with SharePoint running on that platform the new management tools are a logical extension.

With SharePoint backup 2.0, Idera has added a redundant backup service to ensure fault tolerance; intelligent incremental backup; intelligent search; and self-service.

The incremental backup is powered by an engine that automatically determines whether a full or partial backup is needed to ensure efficiency. The IntelliSearch feature lets administrators search across multiple backups to quickly find and retrieve anything from individual items to entire SharePoint sites.

The self-service feature is a SharePoint Web Part built by Idera that adds a button to a user’s SharePoint menu that says “recover documents.” When pushed, the button lets users search for their documents or files across an entire SharePoint server farm.

“The real bug bear for admins was people like me who would call up SharePoint admins and say I need this presentation I deleted out of SharePoint,” said Rick Pleczko, president and CEO of Idera. “The admin would have to restore an SQL Server database just to get the right document back. And imagine how many calls you get if you are an organization of thousands of SharePoint users.”

SharePoint backup 2.0 installs on the servers that run SharePoint’s Web Front End application. Each server will need a copy of the SharePoint backup agent. The software ships today and is priced at $1,495 per server.
