IPhone 4 Business Users Get Remote Data Wiping

Businesses worried about keeping tabs on the latest Apple iPhone will soon be able to remotely interact with the devices in the event of theft, loss or mishap, Absolute Software has announced.

Techworld — Businesses worried about keeping tabs on the latest Apple iPhone will soon be able to remotely interact with the devices in the event of theft, loss or mishap, Absolute Software has announced.

Using an update due in the next quarter, Absolute Software will enable Apple iPhones running iOS 4 to be remotely managed like any other portable computer using the company's Absolute Manage system, the company said.

This will include important security features such as remote wiping of lost devices, resetting of passcodes by admins, and locking stolen units. Day-to-day tasks will now include managing user profiles, gathering data about third-party installed applications, and general asset management.

"With enterprise deployments of these devices on the rise, we are extending our long-standing focus on lifecycle management for Apple products to include robust management for iPhone," said Absolute Software's CEO, John Livingston.

"With our forthcoming solution, IT will be able to address brand new challenges such as managing in-house applications and managing iOS device configuration."

The software can also cope with complete remote imaging of individual iPhones as well as software patch management.

Absolute is a bit vague on the precise timescale for the release but promises to deliver it to customers sometime between July and September.
