Best Buy Offers Massive Surface Pro Discount as Tablet Fades Away

PC World — If you're in the market for a last-generation Surface Pro, now is the time to buy--before that version of Microsoft's tablet is gone forever.
Best Buy is currently offering the Surface Pro with 128GB of storage for just $500, far lower than the $900 that Best Buy (and Microsoft) usually charges. There doesn't seem to be any catch; the price applies to new models, and you can either buy them online or in-store.
Best Buy is also selling the original Windows RT-powered Surface (32GB) for $280, $70 off the original $350 price.
Microsoft appears to be clearing out old inventory in the new year, encouraging buyers to jump up to the new, Intel "Haswell"-powered Surface Pro 2 models. As our review found, they're certainly more powerful and offer longer battery life, to boot.
And that argument is bolstered by the fact the Microsoft itself is selling the 128GB Surface Pro for $599, as part of a special "holiday deal" with limited quantities in stock. You can also get a $50 credit at NFLShop.com when you buy a Surface Pro this week, according to Microsoft. In addition, Microsoft isn't even featuring the Surface Pro on its main Surface page: the available configurations are the Surface, Surface 2, and Surface Pro 2.
But Microsoft is also discounting Windows tablets that use the new, lower-power Intel "Bay Trail" Atom chips. As ExtremeTech noted, the 32GB Dell Venue Pro has dropped from $299 to $229, while the 32GB Lenovo Miix 2 and 32GB Toshiba Encore have fallen to $249, from $299. That puts them on par with the price tags of many Android devices.
While Best Buy doesn't note the Surface Pro deal as a limited-time offer, there's no indication that these prices will be around forever. In fact, there's not necessarily a reason to believe that the Surface Pro will be around in a few months, given the sales at both Microsoft and Best Buy.
