Ones to Watch Award FAQ

Below you'll find a list of common queries with our responses:

Q) Who has won this award in the past?

A) This awards program is produced by the global peer advisory community CIO Executive Council, and presented by CIO magazine. To see the honorees from 2005 through 2012, visit here.

Q) What is the significance of the award? What does it represent?

A) The CIO Ones to Watch Award honors the rising stars in IT—the senior staff destined to become the CIOs of the future—as identified and sponsored by the CIOs of today's leading organizations. Council members believe that developing the next generation of IT leaders is essential to IT's ability to add real and sustained value to the enterprise. Yet research shows that CIOs do not spend enough time and attention on this. Through this award, we honor those who do and showcase how they do it. Second, this award will ensure that we stay in touch with the people who are leading the profession as they advance in their careers. Finally, it is a way for us to serve our readers and members by helping them recognize their key staff in a positive and public way.

To be eligible, nominees must not now, or ever have been, the top head of IT in any organization.

Q) When and where will the awards ceremony be held?

A) The 2013 CIO Ones to Watch Awards will be presented during a special reception, dinner and awards presentation in May 2013, at the CIO Leadership Event.

Q) What are the criteria for winning a Ones to Watch Award?

A) Applications are judged by a panel of veteran CIOs who are experienced in leadership development and preparing today's senior IT leaders to be tomorrow's successful CIOs. Specific criteria include:

  • Job history—do nominees have a wide breadth of exposure to key components of IT over their careers, as well as a track record of working with various business units, functions, industries and geographies?
  • Job scope—have the nominees a high level of current responsibility for significant budget, numbers of direct reports and supported users?
  • On-the-job accomplishments—what have been the nominees' outstanding accomplishments within the IT function and across the enterprise that delivered measureable results and required team leadership, negotiation and collaboration with business peers, strategic thinking and bold action.

Q) How many winners are there?

A) There are generally 20-25 award winners each year.
