2008 Winner Profile
U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development
- Project Description: HUD deployed the National Housing Locator System (NHLS), a Web-based system that allows federal, state and local agencies to rapidly find available housing for people displaced from their homes by a natural disaster. NHLS gets data on housing inventories from more than 100 private and government data providers. Among its features, NHLS uses a Google Maps mash-up to easily and quickly display views of available properties. The system was used to relocate families in Florida displaced by tornadoes in 2007 as well as families in California who lost their homes to fires in October.
