2009 Winner Profile

District of Columbia Department of Public Works

  • Project Description: The City of Washington, D.C., implemented a new parking enforcement plan, Sweepercam, designed to improve the enforcement of parking regulations along street cleaning routes. Sweepercam uses cameras attached to sweeping vehicles to capture license plates and locations of illegally parked cars, eliminating the need for patrol officers to hand deliver tickets. Once the vehicle¿s information is captured, a citation is sent to the registered vehicle owner. This approach to enforcing parking regulations has resulted in a 500 percent improvement in parking enforcement effectiveness and is expected to cover the systems costs within two years.
