2009 Winner Profile

Vail Resorts

  • Project Description: The ski mountain resort operator implemented an RFID-enabled ski pass system, allowing season pass holders to board lifts without physically presenting a pass. Handheld computers scan the RFID passes through clothing, eliminating hassles with winter gear in order to board a ski lift. Fixed readers and overhead antennas are mounted at lifts which service "specialty" terrain in order to recognize pass holders and provide more customized and relevant information to them based on their skiing preferences and patterns. The use of RFID-enabled passes has also reduced fraud: The company's resorts report up to a 100 percent increase in the number of instances of fraud detected, compared to prior years.
