2010 Winner Profile
Sutter VNA and Hospice
- Project Description: Starting in December 2008, Sutter VNA and Hospice deployed an integrated electronic record-management system with the ability to access its data through smartphones. The system enabled healthcare professionals to update medical records from the point of care--the patient's home. By adopting the software-as-a-service model, the company (the home-care division of Sutter Health) allows nurses and other clinical staff to document care in the field, reducing the time to complete a record of their visit and allowing more rapid follow-up and billing. Because devices are often lost, Sutter deployed another service to secure the smartphones, using encryption, password protection and remote data wipes to protect patient data at levels meeting or exceeding the data security on laptops. Syncing data takes 60 to 90 seconds, compared to 20 minutes for laptops. The time from the start of care to billing was reduced from more than a month to less than week.
