2010 Winner Profile
Taser International
- Project Description: The maker of Tasers--weapons that produce electric shocks, commonly used by police to subdue suspects--created the Taser Internet Services Group to collect and store videos showing police officers' encounters with suspects and data on the firing of Taser devices. The subscription-based service the group provides, called Evidence.com, collects multimedia evidence--including video and GPS location data--to enable law enforcement officers to back up their version of events after an encounter. A subscriber wears a small camera, dubbed Axon, that uploads video from the device at the end of the wearer's shift. The service uses Cisco's Unified Computing System to bring together computing resources, storage and network access in a single virtualized system, reducing the support infrastructure by half. Initially, the system will manage up to 10 petabytes of data, which will be expanded to 200 petabytes within 3 years.
