Media and telecoms provider Virgin Mediahas increased its network capacity with the completion of a new submarine cable link between Great Britain and Ireland to serve its customers in both countries.

A new 40Gbit/s submarine cable enhancement has been put in place as part of the Virgin Media broadband service strategy, which has involved the land based and submarine cables being upgraded so that Virgin Media has quadrupled its network capacity.

Troubled telecoms service and hardware provider Nortel carried out the upgrade for Nortel. Canadian Nortel was placed into administration in January, with Ernst & Young carrying out the administration.

CIO 100 ranked Virgin Mediahas customers in Britain and Ireland following the 2007 merger between NTL and Virgin Media.
