HSBC confirms appointment of Barclays CIO Darryl West

HSBChas confirmed that Darryl West, former CIO at Barclays, has started this week at the bank as its new CIO.

The position at HSBC is believed to be a newly-created role. West will report to Andy Maguire, group chief operating officer and group general manager at the bank.

Barclays has confirmed that West left his CIO role at the bank in December. Ian Buchanan, chief operating officer (COO) at Barclaycard, is also acting as interim CIO following West’s departure. He is reporting to Barclays chief operations and technology officer, Michael Harte.

A spokesperson for Barclays said that the bank is recruiting for the CIO role.

West joined Barclays as CIO from Lloyds Banking Groupin November 2013. The same month, he took up the interim role of group chief operations and technology officer when Shaygan Kheradpir left the position.

In March 2014, Barclays awarded West a share package worth £504,220 at the market price of 232.59 pence per share. His basic pay was not disclosed.

Anthony Watson, the Barclays CIO for Retail and Business Banking for Europe and the Middle East, was also a high-profile technology executive exit when he announced on CIO UK in February 2014 he was leaving Barclays to join US sports mega brand Nike. Watson has since left his role in Portland, Oregon, stepping down in December last year after less than a year at Nike.
