UK engineering firm Amey has recruited an IT Director to focus on data and technology and its implications for cities. Dr Rick Robinson, who joins Amey from IBM, will report to CIO Darrly Salmons, who figures in this title’s CIO 100 of transformative business technology leaders. As Group IT Director for Smart Data and Technology Robinson will lead the development of data technologies in civil engineering and building and work with Amey’s existing clients on how to use data to achieve environmental, financial and social outcomes that are beneficial, Amey said in a statement. CIO Salmonssaid in a statement that Robinson’s expertise will “support the urban innovation agenda” which sees Amey working with local authorities to use cloud computing, social media and machine-to-machine computing to increase efficiency and sustainability. As Executive Architect of IBM Robinson was involved with a number of European Smart City projects and sat on the UK Government’s Smart Cities Forum. Robinson also worked closely with academia, business and professional associations on the same topic. Founded in 1921, Amey is an infrastructure support service provider with its head office in the Oxford Science Park. Up until 2010 Amey jointly owned Tube Lines – the consortium responsible for the maintenance, renewal and upgrade of infrastructure on three London Underground lines, and last year acquired utilities, waste and public service providers Enterprise.
