BAA’s Philip Langsdale to become DWP CIO

BAA CIO Philip Langsdale is set to return public sector, with a move to the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). He replaces outgoing head of IT Joe Harley, who also stepped down as Government CIO.

In a statement, Permanent Secretary, Robert Devereux said:

“This is a key role for the Department and I am delighted that we have secured someone of such exceptional calibre from a field of very strong candidates.  Philip has a proven track record of delivery and I am confident that he will provide the Department with the vital expertise and strong leadership needed as we take forward our reform programme.”

Langsdale has been CIO at BAA, overseeing a root and branch IT revamp at the company’s main airport, Heathrow, for three and a half years.

The statement also included a comment from Langsdale: I am delighted to be joining DWP and to have the opportunity to support the challenging and important reform agenda.  I look forward to working with colleagues in the Department, and its suppliers, to deliver better quality service and value for money.”

Langsdale is also owner and chairman of boatbuilding company Cornish Crabbers

According to a DWP spokesman, negotiations are still going on over when Langsdale will be released from his responsibilities at BAA and no start date has been set.
