Virgin Mediahas been named the UK’s fastest home broadband ISP by Top 10 Broadband.

The comparison website gave CIO 100 ranked Virgin Media the award based on 400,000 speed tests the web users visiting the site took part in. Virgin Media also came top in the Broadband Innovation category for its 50Mbps service.

The judges commended the 50Mbps service, saying: “Virgin Media’s 50Mb service has made the almost unthinkable possible right here in the UK – things like downloading a 60Mb album in just 11 seconds”.

Vodafonetopped the ‘Fastest Mobile Broadband ISP’ category while the TalkTalk Essentials package won the ‘Best Broadband and Phone’ category.

Top 10 Broadband said O2 topped the Best Rate Home Broadband category, while it named Plusnet as the ISP that offers the best value in home broadband and 3 the best value mobile broadband provider.

Alex Buttle, director at Top 10 Broadband, said: “The last 12 months have seen huge changes in the broadband market and it is clear most Brits are getting more broadband choice and better broadband service than ever before. What these awards also demonstrate is just how competitive the broadband market is in 2009, with no single provider dominating the categories”.
