Aviva has appointed Andrew Brem as its Chief Digital Officer to “drive Aviva’s group-wide digital transformation” and deliver its digital first strategy. The former Trading Director for British Gas, who also held a e-commerce and digital leadership roles, will report to CEO Mark Wilson. Brem said: “I am thrilled to be joining Aviva – a strong brand committed to becoming a truly digital insurer. We’ve all seen how technology has changed the way we live our lives; from buying groceries online to controlling our heating from anywhere with an app. “Now is the time to bring the digital revolution to insurance; transforming the way people can buy and use our products every day.” Aviva’s first CDO appointment comes two months after Phil Pavitt’s departure. The insurer’s Global IT Operations and Transformation Director since January 2013 who was responsible for building digital architecture and improving customer service, Pavitt left to take up a the Global CIO role at opticians Specsavers in June. Pavitt had left his role as CIO of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs to join Aviva, with his HMRC CIO successor Mark Hall following not long after to join Pavitt as Aviva’s Director of Service Management. The Aviva CIO is Monique Shivanandan, who also reports to CEO Wilson and started her role in February 2014, taking over the technology estate after former CIO and COO Cathryn Riley left the organisation. Upon Shivanandan’s appointment, Wilson praised the former BT Retail CIO and Capital One CTO for bringing “digital capabilities” to the insurance firm. On CDO Brem’s appointment, chief executive Wilson said: “Andrew is an exciting addition to the leadership team and will ensure Aviva delivers its ‘digital first’ strategy. “The insurance industry punches below its weight when it comes to digital propositions that customers are looking for. Coming from outside the insurance industry, Andrew will bring a fresh perspective. “I am confident he will drive Aviva’s digital transformation.” During his time at British Gas, Brem helped create the Hive brand to focus on the benefits of connected homes using remote control heating. He has also worked at Carphone Warehouse, ASDA, and McKinsey.
