Vodafone & Cable & Wireless CIOs at the heart of the major merger

Vodafoneand Cable & Wireless Worldwide have announced an agreement that will see Vodafone take over Cable & Wireless Worldwide. The deal brings two of the UK’s heavyweight telecommunications providers together as a major global market force.

Vodafone will take over the entirety of Cable & Wireless Worldwide in the £1bn deal that the two parties state. The board of Cable & Wireless Worldwide have recommended the deal to their shareholders.

“We see ourselves as an integrated communications provider, way beyond mobile, although that is of course our DNA,” said Albert Hitchcock, CIO of Vodafone Group Services, in an interview with this title. Vodafone has moved beyond its heritage as a mobile networks provider in the last decade.

“We are not just mobile now, we are moving into being a complete end-to-end provider, offering DSL, fixed line, broadband and enterprise offerings,” Hitchcock said.

Richard Wilson, Director of IT Operations at Cable & Wireless Worldwide told CIO that the company has provides over 20,000km of fibre network in the UK as well as a cable network 425,000km in length.

In a statement Vittorio Colao, CEO of Vodafone Group, said: The acquisition of Cable & Wireless Worldwide creates a leading integrated player in the enterprise segment of the UK communications market.
