Dubai Airports EVP Technology and Infrastructure Michael Ibbiston

Michael Ibbistonhas added a range of new responsibilities to his role since he was appointed EVP of Technology and Infrastructure at Dubai Airports in 2016. His job has extended from just the technology function to cover the entire infrastructure of the airport, the company’s engineering services and its energy management team, which is using data analytics to help reach a target of cutting energy consumption by 20%.

In June, the CIO 100 high-flyer told the CIO UK podcast that he aimed to use technology to give his team the space to focus on the passenger experience.

“We went through a big technology team transformation over the last couple of years,” he said. “And about 30% of our staff who really weren’t focused on anything related to passengers or aeroplanes have been moved into roles now, where they work on software development for partner and customer facing systems and things like data analytics, and dashboarding, and real-time data platforms and real-time alerting to improve the operation.”

Dubai is the third airport worldwide and the second in the United Arab Emirates where Ibbitson has worked, following four year spells as CIO of Gatwick Airport and VP of IT at the Abu Dhabi Airports Company. His CV also includes stints as an IT Manager at construction giant Bechtel and Indian conglomerate GVK.
