ACS: 45 per cent of private sector ICT employees not given payrise

ICT employees have seen their salary increases slow over the past 12 months with an rise overall of 3.3 per cent and 45 per cent of private sector employees receiving no increase at all.

The results come from the Australian Computer Society’s (ACS) 2010 remuneration survey; an annual insight into the wages and entitlements of 1090 ICT professionals.

ACS president, Anthony Wong, said the results are a direct reflection of the state of the economy.

“As demand for ICT professionals recovers from the global economic slowdown, the rate of increase of salaries is expected to increase. The rate of increase will depend on the competitiveness of local ICT providers and professionals as this will have an impact of the use of offshore providers of ICT services, putting downward pressure on local salary outcomes,” he said.

The survey results indicate the public and education sector experienced the greatest rate of increase, while remuneration paid to all ICT professionals increased by an average of 3.3 per cent.

CIOs and general manager roles were the most lucrative based on the value of base salary, bonuses, superannuation and the value of fringe benefits.

Wong said several projects will help the industry to prosper over the next 12 months.

“Recent infrastructure announcements concerning the development of a National High Speed Broadband infrastructure and on-going development of electronic systems in the health and security sectors are anticipated to provide significant job opportunities in the medium term,” he said.
