I\u2019m really proud of the team that developed this software that was essentially just for our own use and now has achieved international recognitionDr Paul Duignan\nA project management software created by Wellington based Parker Duignan Consulting has made it to Gartner\u2019s list of \u2018Cool Vendors in Project Portfolio (PPM) Management\u2019.\nDoViewsoftware is the brainchild of Dr Paul Duignan, who is known in New Zealand for outcomes measurement and strategic planning. \nDuignan says the citation is a boost for the New Zealand software industry, as only a handful of Kiwi companies have been recognised by Gartnerin this category. Duigan says he started working on the software over a decade ago with his son Matthew who was then doing his PhD.\nGartner says delivering better business outcomes is a constant top priority for PPM leaders. Enterprise-wide tools have existed for years to solve this problem and have suffered from both poor adoption and limited market penetration, it states. \n\u201cDoView solves this problem by approaching the problem from the bottom up instead of the top down. It does so by inexpensively putting the solution in the hands of the person who needs it the most mdash; the project manager (PM). DoView allows the PM to prepare a linked analysis (benefit or results chain) with a single piece of software and his or her own computer. It requires no support from IT and can be purchased and expensed on the company credit card. At $250, DoView also has the advantage of being a tool that PMs are free to choose for themselves.\u201d\nAs for challenges ahead, Gartner says while DoView is an innovative methodology, its technology is two generations behind the times. \u201cAlso, DoView is being run out of a boutique consulting firm. DoView's \u2018sweet spot\u2019 has historically been the nonprofit and public sectors mdash; shifting to other industries may prove challenging.\u201d\nThe software arose from Duignan\u2019s conceptual work for which he has been previously recognised with a Fulbright Senior Scholar award. \n\u201cWe came from a business need point of view,\u201d Duignan tells CIO New Zealand. \u201cWe have been developing strategies, we know this inside out. We build it in a way that meets business needs.\u201d\n\u201cWe developed this software that in the course of a meeting, we could extract the strategy model from the way people were thinking and what they were trying to achieve, and then get it into a visual model.
