More Australian organisations are investing in big data analytics as CIOs use the technology to deliver on line of business (LOB) outcomes, according to the results of an IDC survey. The survey found 80 per cent of 300 organisations either deployed or plan to launch big data analytics in the next 12 months, with a third citing analytics as essential or critical to their business. Big data projects a focus for Australian mid-market: IDC Marketing is driving big data adoption: IDC How big data is transforming IT from a cost centre to a profit centre According to IDC Australia and New Zealand head of software research and big data, Shayum Rahim, the survey results show that Australian organisations are at different levels of maturity when it comes to big data projects. For example, some are in discovery stage while others are using advanced analytics to drive decision making. “Technology vendors and service providers will really need to think about where in this maturity model they will engage customers,” he said in a statement. “Do they go with the low hanging fruit and target customers with budgeted projects, or do they expand their pipeline and work with those customers who have just begun their business analytics journey?” Rahim added that it is not just the CIO making the decision to invest in big data projects but the entire c-suite who want to deliver line of business (LOB) outcomes. “There will be a growing need for CIOs to be closer linked to LOBs and their specific goals if they are to remain relevant in rapidly changing organisational landscapes,” he said.
