AGL Energy Limited (AGL) is seeking its first group-level chief technology officer.

The successful candidate will report to the CIO and be accountable for “leading and defining AGL’s technical architecture, having an anticipatory view that matches where AGL’s technology needs to be in line with both business direction and potential disruptive technologies,” the ASX-listed company said.

Though AGL has had a CTO position before, for a business unit focused on new energy, this is the first CTO position with an organisation-wide remit.

In September last year, AGL appointed Simon Moorfield as CIO following a executive roster restructure that left it without an IT chief for nearly six months.

The restructure split the functions of the CIO role into three separate positions – and the company appointed three former CFOs to executive GMs of organisational transformation, finance and technology and energy market operations.

AGL’s former long-term CIO Owen Coppage returned home to Wanaka, New Zealand before taking a consultancy role.

The new CTO would “provide thought leadership around the use of technology trends and how best to incorporate it in to AGL’s program delivery and IT operations”, according to the job listing.

The technical focus of the role includes software development, use of software products, infrastructure cloud strategy and architecture, data architecture and digital technology integration.

A key responsibility of the role will be to “create and maintain a of high level solutions architecture for all application, information, infrastructure, security and integration domains across all business units”.

As well as IT industry experience, the advert noted that knowledge of the insurance industry would be beneficial. Applications for the Melbourne-based role close on June 27.
