Mining giant, Rio Tinto, is migrating its core enterprise IT systems to the cloud following an agreement with Accenture. The program includes the modernisation of its existing enterprise resourcing planning (ERP), information management platforms and consolidating these applications in the public cloud. Accenture is responsible for maintenance and management of these applications and related infrastructure. It will also upgrade Rio Tinto’s global service desk and site support functions, and provide a co-located innovation centre in Singapore. This provides flexibility around costs and ensures they are in line with business demand. “Rio Tinto is on an ambitious journey to a world-class information systems and technology delivery model that is innovative, adaptable and cost-effective, fully supporting our business priorities and group operating model,” said Rio Tinto’s group CIO, Simon Benney. Accenture CIO, Pierre Nanterme, said the solution will enable Rio Tinto to become agile by connecting its infrastructure, software applications, data and operations capabilities so it can better navigate the commodities cycles.
