The University of Technology, Sydney, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Northeastern University in Shenyang, China, to conduct research focused on big data and analytics and explore the possibility of establishing a joint research centre.

The memorandum of understanding was signed on Friday.

According to UTS a research network that links Northeastern University’s spin-off software company, Neusoft, to the UTS’s Advanced Analytics Institute is currently being developed.

In November last year UTS introduced two research degrees in analytics through the AAI, which was founded in 2010.

Analyst firm Gartner predicts that in 2013 big data will drive $34 billion of IT spending. This year spending on big data will reach $28 billion, though the majority of that will be focused on adapting traditional applications, Gartner believes.
