Qantas Airways (ASX: QAN) has announced that 5000 jobs will go over the next three years with 1500 of these to be executives, management and support roles.

A Qantas spokesman said that it “can’t rule out” changes to the IT department.

“At this stage we’re not in a position to announce specifics,” he told CIO Australia. The spokesman would not say when the 1500 executive, management and support job cuts would be made.

The airline announced today an underlying profit before tax (PBT) loss of $252 million and statutory loss after tax of $235 million for the six months ended 31 December 2013.

In September 2013, Qantas announced that CIO Paul Jones had been promoted to executive manager of strategy and planning for Qantas Domestic as part of a series of internal staff changes.

Jones was responsible for launching Qantas IT’s transformation program to improve customer service, reduce costs and align IT with broader Qantas Group strategy.

Customer-facing innovations included improved check-in services, trialling Q Streaming technology and new iPads for hire across its Jetstar fleet, and wireless Internet connectivity on-board select Airbus A380 flights

The airline’s former CTO Luc Hennekens was promoted as new CIO.
