The ABC’s mobile offering has reached record numbers with the ABC for iPad app reaching 100,000 downloads in two and a half months and 1 million iPhone app downloads in 17 months.

Managing director, Mark Scott, said the move to mobile has allowed audiences across the board to share content.

“Mobile devices are a real growth story in modern media – enabling more and more Australians to both experience and share content. Our audience is taking their ABC with them wherever they go, and in record numbers. It’s good to see the ABC is so much a part of the pattern of contemporary life in Australia,” Scott said.

The media giant also achieved 200,000 downloads of the iPhone Triple J Unearthed app in seven months and 10,000 downloads of the ABC for Android app in 17 months.

The ABC’s mobile browser has also experienced an increase in popularity, with a 105 per cent increase in growth over the past twelve months and 50,800 visits last month.

The news comes as head of technology at ABC innovation, Craig Preston, last month told CIO how the media giant is preparing for its ‘biggest ever’ technology project.
