The Department of Finance and Deregulation has issued a call for engagement by industry as it seeks to develop a medium to long-term strategic approach to enterprise resource planning systems used by public sector agencies. Funding for the study was included in the 2013 budget, with the government earmarking $2.8 million over the next two years to examine the “costs and benefits of rationalising the number and type of Enterprise Resource Planning systems used in the Australian Public Service”. The whole-of-government study will seek ways to achieve efficiencies in ERP deployments across federal organisations. An information sheet for industry prepared by Finance highlights the current fragmented approach to ERP across the public sector. The study will examine options for reducing the cost of ERP systems to the government as well as ways to improve business processes. Finance is scheduled to deliver its report in 2015, by June of that year at the latest, with industry consultation running until December 2013.
