Westpac has disestablished the post of chief operating officer and has created a new role incorporating it with the chief information officer.

Chief operating officer Jim Stabback will stay for a period to assist with the transition, according to a bank spokesperson.

The spokesperson did not disclose how the change will affect the current CIO role held by Peter Fletcher.

“The bank is now conducting an executive search for the permanent CIO role,” according to the spokesperson.

Stabback joined Westpac from the Bank of Queensland where he was the CIO and group executive, IT and operations. Fletcher, on the other hand, was CIO at BNZ and had worked overseas for Barclays before joining Westpac in 2012.

“As customers continue to migrate to digital channels, Westpac is increasing the focus on its technology offering as it aspires to be the leading bank in providing digital solutions to their customers. This is a key priority and the reason why a new executive level role of Chief Information Officer has been created,” the bank said in a press statement.
