Here’s how an automobile manufacturing company is embracing digital by adopting a smart manufacturing executing system (MES). There is no dearth of manufacturing software on the shop floor. Production processes are getting smarter in a bid to override manual intervention. AMW Motors is one of India’s leading automobile manufacturing companies that wanted to remove the need for manual assistance and track manufacturing processes real time for better decision making. The company implemented a smart manufacturing executing system (MES), which tracks the entire production cycle from raw materials to finished goods. The insights generated can be analyzed to optimize production output and make smarter decisions. It acts as a bridge between the shop floor and the ERP system and ensures data availability for various business applications, he explains. “MES is seen as an intermediate step between an ERP system, and a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) or process control system.” MES captures data from machine sensors and posts it into the ERP system without manual intervention, and provides real-time information about production, inventory, operator efficiency through analytics and mobility to respective decision makers. Enhanced productivity The solution generates meaningful insights and improves productivity by reducing cycle-time, which helps the factory manager deliver products in a timely and cost-effective manner. It has improved decision making as it is capable of generating reports based on historical data, he explains. “It is also integrated with mobility application for on-the-go users,” Magar adds. It helps in better alignment with business strategies, optimizes cost efficiency and ensures data availability for the users. The integration with analytics dashboards helps in displaying real-time process data for better insights. “It is helping us in creating flawless manufacturing processes by tracking the entire cycle and providing real-time feedback,” says Magar.
