As any other company striving to serve its customers better, KPIT Technologies has been undergoing a digital transformation of its own. As companies adopt digital technologies, a considerable transformation is required in the underlying IT infrastructure to support digital initiatives.

This is mainly because of the substantial difference between architecture of digital applications and traditionally monolithic applications. Digital applications are approaching a certain complexity with digital platforms driving micro services architecture which scale dynamically. These apps also execute memory computing in real time, work on structured and unstructured data sources simultaneously, and provide real time search capabilities. Additionally, they connect with different data sources like IT, OT, IoT technologies, and work on hybrid cloud architecture.

“Because speed of application delivery is a key differentiator for KPIT and our customers, we implemented a private cloud five years ago to allow developers to provision their own compute resources,” says Faheem Kolhar, director–IT of KPIT Technologies.

Roadblocks

While the company’s private cloud helped the application delivery, all other infrastructure services—including network, security, and storage—would often take four weeks to deploy even after application requirements were fully understood.

Concurrent connections and data flow can vary drastically every day, and can come from many sources supporting millions of transactions per second. Additionally, with cyber security risks growing exponentially, traditional security architecture can no longer protect organizations from risks arising from digital applications coming from smart devices.

“We at KPIT being early adopter of most of the infrastructure technologies, developed excellent skill set on leading software defined infrastructure technologies,” says Kolhar. Over the past few years, the company built its Smart Infrastructure with a ‘software defined anything approach’.

Building from scratch

The underline infrastructure comprised of compute, storage, network, security and backup, with software defined everything. The software defined cloud application platform includes a hyper converged infra, monitoring and analytics collaboration tools, and an advanced software defined security.

The digital transformation, internally known as ‘smart enterprise’, aims to advance the company’s business processes using social engagement, mobility, predictive analytics, and container technologies. However, KPIT needed to modernize its infrastructure and application development before these goals can be attained.

With a combination of unified computing system and a policy-based architecture, it successfully simplified and accelerated its application delivery. KPIT adopted the software-centric architecture that tightly integrates compute, storage, networking and virtualization resources, and is called a hyper-convergence infra.

Key Business Benefits

Post this implementation, KPIT experienced improving agility, increase flexibility, and a reduced capex/opex. With the automation, the application infrastructure deployment was accelerated.

By automating multiple automated tasks, the overall efficiency increased and the IT administration efforts has been reduced by 40 percent. Additionally, self service capabilities and workflows have increased customer satisfaction, and reduced overall provisioning as well as decommissioning time frame.

“We also improved our SLAs and CSAT, along with being able to deliver error-free resources within minutes. The accuracy and quality of service has gone up due to the integrated tools,” says Kolhar.

With a simplified data center operations and centralized management, this project has given the company an upper edge in terms of increasing the overall IT staff productivity by 50 percent. Additionally, KPIT decreased its data center complexity and ensured consistent service delivery.

The self-service portal helped to increase the datacenter efficiency by substituting manual tasks with automation.
