Did you know Linus Torvalds loves scuba divingu2026 and that he wrote a dive log software because there were no good ones for Linux?rn

Torvalds once told me during an interview that scuba diving is his only hobby outside of computing. And when he started it he realized that there was no decent dive log software for Linux. So he wrote Subsurface.

Here’s an overview of what the software does, as explained on the project page:

Subsurface can track single- and multi-tank dives using air, Nitrox or TriMix. It allows tracking of dive locations including GPS coordinates (which can also conveniently be entered using a map interface), logging of equipment used and names of other divers, and lets users rate dives and provide additional notes.

The project just announced the 4.5.1 release, which comes with many bug fixes documented here.

The project was founded in 2011 and later on Torvalds’ friend and co-diver Dirk Hohndel, Chief Linux and Open Source Technologist at Intel, took over the project as a maintainer in 2012.

While Torvalds is known for underwater blurry fish butt pics, Hohndel is a master photographer and takes breathtaking shots.

The project is actively looking for contributors in various areas, including translation into different languages. So if you want to get your feet wet with a project created by Torvalds, check out Subsurface.
