WAEC Goes Online in Sierra Leone

The West African Examination Council on Thursday launched WAEC Direct Sierra Leone Online Service, a system that allows students to check their transcripts and test results online.

Students who sat for the West African Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) between 2000 and 2007, the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) between 1996 and 2007, and the National Primary School Examinations between 1993 and 2007 can access their results from the online information system with the WAEC Direct Access Card, a scratch card that costs 10,000 Sierra Leonean leone (US$3.40). Each scratch card has a 12-digit PIN code and allows one user to check his or her results three times.

Results from the system, powered by Nigeria's Fleet Technologies (FTL), can be sent to private e-mail addresses.

The online result-checking system will reduce the stress students experience in travelling long-distance to the capital city to check their results, said the chairperson of the system's launch event, Eugenia Loretta Johnson. It will also ease the administration and verification of results for schools and WAEC officials, she said.

WAEC will continue to use ICT to improve its services in order to bring Sierra Leone's system in line with that of other West African countries, said Mohammed Sapateh, head of WAEC's national office.

“Some of the colossal challenges before WAEC now are the needs to undertake online registration of students for examinations, to undertake electronic testing and marking of tests,” he said.

FTL Managing Director and CEO Kunle Akinniran said his company feels privileged to be part of the move to take Sierra Leone to another stage in history.

Akinniran disclosed that software that can capture students’ information, including passport photographs, for forwarding to WAEC’s central system has been developed, and that other services, such as SMS (Short Message Service) and e-mail, would be deployed to the Web site in the future.
