ERP is also becoming more modular, including hybrid solutions that bridge on-premises and the cloud. Gartner’s “Predicts 2014” series introduced the idea of “Post Modern ERP”: loosely coupled modules that facilitate different solutions for different functional areas. Some components can be on premises with others in the cloud. Loose coupling allows individual modules to be upgraded or replaced quickly, speeding implementation and increasing flexibility to react to business changes.

When everything works properly, the Post Modern ERP should significantly increase ERP’s value to the enterprise. Unfortunately, IT vendors do not always work smoothly with each other.
