iOS 9: How to disable Wi-Fi Assist

iOS 9 comes with some great new features, and one of them is called Wi-Fi Assist. Wi-Fi Assist lets you automatically use cellular data when your Wi-Fi connection performs poorly. This can be a great tool, but it can also mean that your iPhone might run up your cellular data bill.

In this how-to I’ll show you how you can easily disable Wi-Fi Assist in iOS 9.

How to disable Wi-Fi Assist in iOS 9

Just follow these simple steps to disable Wi-Fi Assist in iOS 9:

1. Tap on Settings.

2. Tap on Cellular.

3. Scroll down and tap on the Wi-Fi Assist button to disable it.

And that’s it, that’s all you need to do to turn it off. Now your iPhone will no longer use your cellular data connection if you are on a poorly performing Wi-Fi connection.

Why I disabled Wi-Fi Assist on my iPhone

Once I found out about Wi-Fi Assist possibly running up cellular data usage, I turned it off immediately. Since I am on a good Wi-Fi connection most of the time, I really didn’t need Wi-Fi Assist.

But, more importantly, I also have a low cellular data limit with my network provider. It’s only about 150 MB, so there’s no way I want any of that being used by Wi-Fi Assist in iOS 9. It would run the risk of running up my cellular data bill for the month and that’s not something I want to have happen.

Don’t get me wrong though, I actually think Wi-Fi Assist in iOS 9 is a great feature for the folks who want and need it. It has the potential to smooth out data connections when somebody is stuck on a crappy Wi-Fi network. But that has never really been a problem for me, so I’d rather not risk having it come on and eat up my paltry data limit.

Wi-Fi Assist should be added to the iOS 9 Control Center

It might be a good idea for Apple to add Wi-Fi Assist to the Control Center. That would make it easier and faster for users to toggle it on and off when they might be out and about using various Wi-Fi connections.

Perhaps Apple will add it in a future iOS update, we’ll just have to wait and see.
