How to use the Apple Watch on either wrist

Apple has done a great job with Apple Watch in terms of making sure that anyone can use it, including folks that might be left-handed or that might otherwise prefer using the watch on either hand. Yes, you can comfortably wear the Apple Watch on your right or left wrist.

In this tip I’ll show you how you can change the wrist orientation of the Apple Watch.

How to change the wrist orientation of the Apple Watch

Follow these simple steps to change the wrist orientation of your Apple Watch:

1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

2. Tap on General.

3. Tap on Watch Orientation.

4. Tap on Left Wrist or Right Wrist.

5. Tap on Digital Crown on Left Side or Digital Crown on Right Side.

And that’s all you need to do to use your Apple Watch on either wrist. If you change your mind you can always go back to the other wrist. It takes just a few seconds to put the wrist orientation settings on the Apple Watch back to the default.

Changing wrists on the Apple Watch is not just for left-handed users

Now you might think that only left-handed people would really want to change the wrist orientation of the Apple Watch. But I’ve found that that’s not really true. I’m right-handed but I’ve found at least one occasion where using the Apple Watch on my right wrist instead of my left one was absolutely necessary.

I do the Body Beast weightlifting routine, and as part of that I wear lifting gloves to help protect my hands and stabilize my wrists. However, I noticed that when I wore my Apple Watch on my left wrist, the Digital Crown kept bumping into the bottom of my glove and Siri would come on unexpectedly.

I can’t convey how annoying I found it when Siri kept coming on during my workout. I had to try to press the Digital Crown to turn him off and go back to lifting. I thought initially I could avoid it by pulling the watch further away from my lifting glove and further up my arm. But that didn’t work and finally I decided that I’d had enough.

So I followed the steps I outlined above and then put the watch on my right wrist, with the Digital Crown facing away from the glove on my right hand. Siri stopped coming on and I was able to finish my workout without any more problems.

Workout aside, changing wrists can also be somewhat refreshing if you simply get tired of having the Apple Watch on one wrist. It gives you the chance to wear the watch slightly differently at different times. So having the capability to change the wrist orientation can be quite useful in and of itself.

And if you’re someone who isn’t sure which wrist to wear the Apple Watch on, don’t be afraid to experiment to figure out which wrist is the most comfortable option for you. If you change your mind after choosing one, it takes just a few taps on the Apple Watch app on your iPhone to change the watch’s wrist orientation back to the other wrist.
